Cashmere's high price comes from its rarity and labor-intensive production. A single cashmere goat produces a very small amount of the soft undercoat fiber each year, and it can take the annual fleece of 3 to 8 goats to create just one sweater. First, check the garment's label; by law in the U.S., it must state "100% Cashmere." Gently stretch a part of the sweater; it should spring back to its original shape. A good quality knit will also resist "pilling" (forming small balls of fiber) when you rub the surface.

Pilling is caused by friction, which makes shorter, weaker fibers tangle together. The single most effective way to prevent it is to invest in a higher-quality garment made from long, fine fibers (Grade A cashmere). These longer fibers are more durable and less likely to break and form pills.
